Okay: so there’s no guarantee that lemons will keep the doctor away forever (nor do apples), but incorporating them into your diet regularly will undoubtedly have a positive effect on your health. They’ve been known for their therapeutic properties since the 1700’s, when they were discovered to treat scurvy, a then-popular disease among explorers at sea. Due to their sour taste, most of us don’t eat them as a standalone fruit, but they add a flavorful punch to many dishes, and are extremely rich in valuable nutrients – like potassium, calcium, vitamin C and pectin fiber.
Our grandmother’s advice was right on point: having a glass or two of warm lemon water in the morning is excellent for your health. Drinking it on an empty stomach is even better, since it will even more effectively flush toxins from your body, enhance enzyme function, and stimulate your liver just before breakfast. Making this a habit will decrease inflammation in your body, by removing uric acid in your joints and purifying your blood.
3 More Reasons for Lemon Love:
Fight viral infections. Studies have shown that warm lemon water is one of the most effective ways to lesson the symptoms of viral infections and the sore throats that often follow. The vitamin C in lemon juice will boost your immune system to fight off the infection completely.
Tooth Relief. A little surprising to us, lemons also help relieve toothaches and gingivitis, as well as freshen our breath. (Please do be warned though: citric acid can erode tooth enamel, so don’t rush to brush your teeth afterwards!)
A Whiff of Energy & Calm. Even just the scent of lemon has been shown to have a calming effect. And if f you’re looking for an energy boost, the smell of lemons also increases alertness and raises energy levels. If you’re trying to decrease your caffeine intake, or give it up entirely, lemons are a great place to start.
We already knew lemons were good for us. These tidbits are just a few more reasons why this sour fruit is also one of the sweetest.
